Financial Considerations

  • Students pay tuition to the Minneapolis School of Anesthesia and to Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota.
  • Tuition to the Minneapolis School of Anesthesia is due and payable upon billing from the School. Billing will occur the first week in September, January, and May. Tuition payments should be made directly to the School Office. Deferred payment plans may be arranged through the School's Accountant. Tuition will be billed each semester. Failure to make payment or arrangements will result in suspension from School.
  • Currently, tuition is $7,860 per year, or $2,620 per semester. The amount of tuition is subject to change. Saint Mary's University tuition is in addition to that paid to Minneapolis School of Anesthesia.
  • Saint Mary's University of Minnesota tuition and fees are set by the University. Currently, tuition is $310 per credit. Tuition and fees are due and payable when the bill is received, and are subject to change. Students pay for 23 of the 48 credits earned at the University. (25 credits are transferred in at no cost to the student.)
  • Refund of tuition paid to the Minneapolis School of Anesthesia will be according to the following schedule:
      First week of semester: 100%
End of second week of semester: 75%
End of third week of semester: 50%
After the fourth week of semester: None
  • Students must be prepared to purchase textbooks and equipment costing approximately $2,200 on the first day of class.
  • Students are encouraged to become associate members of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) at a cost of $100.00. Membership entitles the student to the publications of the AANA. Students are encouraged to become members of the Student Organization at a cost of $27.00.
  • All students must possess both a Minnesota and a Wisconsin Nursing License and maintain them through the program.
  • Financial aid is available to eligible students through Saint Mary's University. Information regarding application for financial aid will be provided after acceptance into the program.
  • Holidays
The following holidays are allowed: New Year's Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.

    Personal Days
Students are granted thirty personal days off during the program. All Personal Days used in excess of 30 days must be completed after the original graduation date. The entire course(s) or semester must be repeated when the student takes personal days consisting of more than 20 consecutive clinical and/or didactic days or if more than 20 clinical and/or didactic days are missed in a semester for any reason. The entire policy relating to attendance and absence will be given to the student in the Student Handbook after being accepted into the program.

    Vacation
Students have no school activities between Christmas and New Year’s Day each year. There is no other scheduled vacation assigned during the 27-month program. Students will use their personal days for time off during the program.

    Maternity Leave
The student is expected to begin maternity leave under the direction of her obstetrician and to complete the program as soon as her obstetrician advises that she may begin work following delivery according to the leave of absence policy.

    Housing
Students provide their own room and board.

    Transportation/Parking
Students must provide their own transportation. Although bus service is available, it is preferable for the students to have their own transportation. Free parking is available at the School, not at the hospitals. It is about twenty-five miles from the furthest clinical site to the school.

The regional anesthesia special experience requires that students travel to a hospital that is approximately 1-4 hours from the Cities. The experience consists of two 3-week rotations. A room is provided for the student during the regional anesthesia experience.

    Employment Policy
Registered nurse anesthesia students shall not be employed as nurse anesthetists by title or function. Although a limited amount of part-time work in nursing is permitted, this practice is discouraged.

    Time Commitment
The students' committed time includes class time, class preparation, clinical time, which includes call, and clinical preparation. During an average week, students should expect between 60-70 hours of time committed to the program.

    Transfer Students
Any student interested in transferring into or out of the Program, may request the School's transfer policy from the Program Director. Transfer into the program is handled on an individual basis, and credit for previous anesthesia training is not guaranteed.

Length of Program - Starting Date
The length of the anesthesia program is twenty-seven months. The program begins approximately September 1st of each year.

    Class Admission Calendar
Applications will be accepted for the upcoming class through November 30 of each year. Interviews are conducted in December and January; and the upcoming class is selected in mid-February.

    Probation
A student may be placed on probation at any time during the Program. The student will be notified, in writing, of special, academic, or clinical problems. Criteria and procedure for dismissal and probation and students' rights to appeal decisions are published in the Student Handbook that is provided to each student.

    Dismissal Policy
The School reserves the right to dismiss any student who does not meet the academic, clinical, or attendance requirements, according to existing policy.

    Graduation Criteria
Students will be graduated after the following criteria are met:

      a. Complete all course work satisfactorily.
      b. Maintain a 3.000 grade point average.
      c. Complete all requirements of the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs.
      d. Attainment of the stated Terminal Objectives of the Program.
      e. Completion of a satisfactory attendance record.
      f. Completion of a comprehensive examination.

A student must have all degree requirements completed prior to graduation. An application for graduation and payment of a graduation fee are additional requirements of Saint Mary's University.

    Deferral of Graduation
Graduation may be deferred if the student has not met graduation criteria.

    Graduation
Graduates of the Program receive a diploma. They are recommended to the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists to write the Certification Examination. The Council determines an individual's eligibility to write the examination. The Council on Certification grants initial certification to those who pass the Examination. This entitles the person to use the title "Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist" (CRNA).
